Executive Summary: The naming of Gorakhpur is due to the name of Guru Gorakhnath who was a famous disciple of Matsyendranath, the founder of Nath community. Guru Gorakhnath Seva Sansthan has a noble intention to disseminate the knowledge about His life history and the holy aphorism of Indian saints and great Indian leaders/personalities to reinforce the rich cultural heritage and tradition of Gorakhpur through the ages. For that reason they wished to establish a museum and approached to National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) to provide consultancy services towards conceptualization and complete design of museum building, and draw up a comprehensive plan for the purpose of constructing a museum with exhibition galleries with all the necessary infrastructural developments and visitors’ facilities. Creative Museum Designers (CMD), on behalf of NCSM, has developed this Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Names of the Galleries: The galleries of the proposed museum will be based on the following themes:
  • Gallery on Hindu deities (idols)
  • Gallery on the idols of great personalities/leaders
  • Gallery on Hindu yogis of Nath community, their belongings with the clear depiction of their life history and contribution to society
  • Gallery on Hindu saints
  • Gallery on photographs, manuscripts, rare books and coins
  • Gallery on different life events of yogis with representation through diorama
  • Gallery on history and culture of Gorakhpur
  • Gallery on different types and postures of yoga and meditation
Visitors’ facilities & Infrastructural facilities of the project: The other facilities which the museum will be providing are as following:
  • Auditorium
  • Research Cell
  • Audio-visual room
  • A well-equipped library
  • Conference/ Meeting/ Presentation room
  • Object repository
  • Conservation lab
  • Toilets
  • Museum shop etc.
Conclusion:  The proposed museum would be a unique way to spread the message of Guru Gorakhnath and Nath yogis. It will not only showcase the historical documents, manuscripts, artefacts and other rare articles which are important but will also convey message to the common people through interactive exhibitions and interesting programmes.
